For Whom Is Crib Sets And Why You Should Be Concerned
Crib Sets – Everything You Need For Your Newborn to Sleep Soundly From Day One
The best crib sets come with everything you require for your baby to sleep peacefully from the beginning. They’re machine washable, pre-shrunk and designed to fit tightly around the mattress without bunching–a significant safety risk for babies.
One tester for parents said that she had used it for two babies, and then passed it on to a different friend. This makes it a smart buy. Its streamlined design also makes it a great option for minimalist nursery spaces.
Bedding
When it comes to crib bedding, there are a variety of options available. It’s not only about picking a pattern that matches your aesthetic. You also want to ensure that the bedding is fitted tightly and doesn’t gather in areas that could be an choking risk to your child. It is important to choose a soft and durable material to withstand blowouts from diapers, spit up and other messes for months without wearing out.
This Avocado set is one of our favorite. It contains two sheets made with 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. The sheets are MADE SAFE certified, a non-responsible third party certification that ensures that the products of the company are in compliance with strict standards for quality and safety. The sheets are pre-shrunk so that they don’t shrink or stretch after washing. They also fit a standard crib (27 1 The blanket’s size is 4 inches wide and 51 5/8 inches long. They’re also machine washable for the inevitable mess your little child is bound to create.
A crib mattress pad is a great option for babies and toddlers. It provides an additional layer of comfort and shields the mattress from spills and stains. Look for mattresses that are less than an inch thick to ensure your child is able to breathe easily. Avoid anything that is too fluffy, or with bows, long ribbons, and other adornments. These could fall off and pose the risk of strangulation.
Consider purchasing an adjustable crib if you plan to keep your baby in the crib for a long time. They typically convert into a toddler bed and sometimes to a full-size or daybed, too. Some cribs come with the required conversion kits included, but others require an additional purchase.
A few of our favorite cribs include this Dream On Me Ashton 5-in-1 crib that is sleigh-style, constructed of solid wood and comes with one of the highest mattress heights (for parents who are worried about reaching down to a low mattress). We love that it’s also Greenguard Gold certified, meaning it complies with stringent environmental standards to prevent off-gassing.
Mattress
When it is about crib mattresses, firmness and size are important. The AAP recommends a firm mattress that is comfortable and does not leave an indentation on the surface when you place the sheet over it. The mattress should also be the correct size for the crib, and it should stay in place–even after your baby grows out of it.
In addition, you’ll want to determine if the mattress is made of chemicals that could potentially harm your child. Find a mattress that is free of volatile organic compound (VOCs) which release an unpleasant chemical smell. A good indication is a CertiPUR US certificate, which certifies that the foam used in a mattress is made without ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP and TCEP flame retardants, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, formaldehyde Phthalates that are regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and volatile organic compounds.
Other things to consider include how much the mattress carries and whether it’s waterproof or not. A waterproof or wipeable surface is ideal for cleaning, because you’ll be changing sheets in the night. The Naturepedic Organic Cotton Classic 150 Seamless 2-Stage is the largest of the selection we tested at 20 pounds, which may be a nagging issue for some parents.
Another aspect to be aware of is if the mattress is dual-sided; some of these have a firm infant side and an easy toddler side. Pediatricians advise flipping the mattress of your child when they reach the height of normal growth. This is typically around 12 months.
We weighed the mattresses and observed how they could be folded easily to cover the sides of the crib with sheets. We also placed a weight of 8 pounds, slightly heavier than that of a newborn baby, on each mattress to see how it reacted. The most comfortable mattresses did not sink, meaning they have enough support to keep your child from falling over or being suffocated in bed. Some of the mattresses that we test had a removable cover that was machine-washable and is waterproof. This makes cleaning and maintaining them much easier.
Crib Rails
A crib can’t be complete without the right set of rails fixed. While some cribs for babies include a set of baby rails with the crib and others sell them separately. If you opt to buy them separately, search for ones that meet the safety requirements. They must, for instance, be free of loose screws, brackets and other hardware. They must also be able to support the weight of your child, but not be too flimsy. They should also be able to secure themselves in place so that they are not able to be removed by your child.
The best crib rails will not only be strong, they should also fit comfortably within the crib frame. This will stop the mattress from becoming flimsy and potentially risky for your child. When buying a crib rail, be sure to take measurements of the inside of the frame since there are slight variations in the size of cribs. The ideal space should not be more than three fingers wide.
It is also important to make sure the crib rails are devoid of cut-outs with decorative designs and other adornments which could be dangers for suffocation. Avoid placing pillows, blankets, quilts and sheepskins on the crib, as these can contribute to the accumulation of carbon dioxide and increase the risk of SIDS. Consider a crib cover and pad combination for a comfortable sleeping surface for your baby. These products consist of mattress pads with waterproof lining and a fitted “skirt” that wraps over the mattress, much like an oversized sheet.
Lastly, you’ll want to find the best crib rail guards. They are specifically designed to cushion your baby’s head when it falls on the crib railings when you’re feeding or cradling him/her her on the bed. They can also help prevent teeth marks and drool discoloration on the crib’s railings that are fixed.
You’ll need to purchase a toddler guardrail once your child is no longer in their crib. This will keep them safe in bed until they are ready for a bigger bed. Sweetpea Baby offers a convertible crib toddler rail that will fit on most cribs that are standard. It is easy to install and meets the CPSC safety standards.
Crib Hardware
Some aspects of crib design are purely aesthetic or subject to personal preference but others–such as the style of slats or whether a crib converts to an infant bed–can have a major impact on the ease of use and the length of time the crib will last. The best cribs feature solid wood construction, comply with multiple safety standards, and are adaptable to various mattress heights. Certain cribs come with unique features which make them more useful. For example the Quick Zip Crib Sheet allows you to replace the sheets without removing the entire mattress.
In general, you should avoid cribs that have decorative cut-outs, or other decorations that could snag on clothes or create a choking risk for infants. Be sure to check the crib’s hardware regularly for loose bolts and other items that could catch on clothing or other objects, and pose the risk of injury.
The best crib sets have easy-to-follow instructions as well as all the required parts including hardware. Most modern cribs take a half-hour or less to put together and many come with all the tools you’ll require.
You may also want to consider a convertible crib that could transform into daybed, toddler bed or a full-size bed. This is a good option for families who plan to use the crib for a number of years or have limited space. It is important to know that some crib conversion kit require additional items to complete the process.
It isn’t easy to comprehend crib hardware, but it’s vital to ensure safety and stability. Most cribs have a system of rectangular block, wedges (also called “shims”) and large chocks known as step chocks. They’re all designed to tighten the connections between the crib and supported surface.
Some shims or chocks can be made of soft woods, which break slowly. This can give an audible warning prior to when they fail. However, woods that are more rigid can break more rapidly and with greater force. Choks and shims made of plastic are also available, and can be installed more easily because they do not require drilling or screwing into the surface.
